McMahon Boys Reach State Quarters

Brien McMahon's boys basketball team came into the season with lofty goals. Now, the Senators are just two wins away from playing for the Class LL championship.

The seventh-seeded Senators held on to beat No. 10 Wilbur Cross, 57-51, on Wednesday night at McMahon. The Senators advance to a showdown Friday against No. 2 St. Joseph on Friday at 7 p.m. in Trumbull. The winner advances to the semifinals next week.

Tyler Shular scored 12 points to lead a balanced attack for McMahon (18-5), which was ahead 29-17 at halftime and needed to hold off a late rally by Cross (18-7). T.J. McCrae added 10 while Lamar Tate and Al Azulphar scored nine apiece for the Senators. Magny Bottex scored eight.

McMahon, which lost in the semifinals of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Tournament to Westhill, fell to St. Joseph, 66-60, during the regular season. Since that game, however, McMahon has won nine of its last 10 games. Its only loss in that span was the defeat to Westhill.
