Madaffari, Heaphy Win Lightfoot Race

NORWALK, Conn. – Before Hurricane Irene hit town on Sunday, Brien McMahon High School senior Chris Madaffari and Norwalk woman Julie Heaphy ran away from the field in warm, muggy conditions at the 34th annual Norwalk Lightfoot Summer Series 11-mile race.

Madaffari, tuning up for the high school cross country season, covered the distance in 1:06.46. He was followed across the finish line by Darien's Jeff Zarrilli in 1:08.55 and Yee-Ning Cheng of Norwalk, who raan 1:12.38.

Heaphy won the women's race in 1:12.56. She was followed by Kathernine Katz of Arlington, Va., in 1:16.59 and Meredith Kalish of Greenwich in 1:22.17. Heaphy won four events in the five-race series,

There were 116 finishers in the race, which started at 8 a.m. at Silvermine Elementary School. The conditions were almost tropical in advance of the hurricane. It was 78 degrees at the start of the race with 98 percent humidity.

Other age group winners included Norwalk's Roger D'Agostin (men 40-49), Norwalk's Mark Harding (men 50-59) New Canaan's Andrea Williamson-Hughes (women 50-59) and Norwalk's Geoff Steadman (men 60-69).

Lightfoot's final race of the year is a half marathon on Sept. 10. The race begins at 10 a.m. at Fox Run School. Complete results and information is available on the club's website.
