Local Rowers Earn Berths on U.S. Team

Two rowers from Fairfield County earned berths Thursday on the United States team that will compete in the World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia.

Rowayton's Brian de Regt and New Canaan's Andrew Campbell won races Thursday in the national selection regatta in West Windsor, N.J. Norwalk's Dan Walsh and New Canaan's Charlie Cole had secured berths on the U.S. team earlier this summer. The meet in Slovenia begins on Aug. 28.

De Regt and Jon Winter of New Haven won the lightweight double sculls. The pair, who train out of the GMS Rowing Center in New Milford, won in 6:34.04. They won the race by about three seconds. "That was probably the toughest field we have ever faced in the U.S.," de Regt said on the USRowing website. "It was really tight through 750 meters to go, and then we were able to open up just a little bit and get more comfortable in the last 250 meters."

Campbell, a rising sophomore at Harvard, continued to make waves in the men's lightweight single sculls. Campbell, who won a bronze medal at the World Under 23 championships last month, won in 7:11.1. He won by over three seconds.

Walsh was named to the Men's 8, and Cole will compete on the Men's 4. For complete results from Thursday's meet, visit usrowing.org.
