Lione, N. Stamford Advance in Little League Play

National Lione and North Stamford secured the final two playoff spots in the District 1 Little League 12-year-old baseball tournament and will advance to Wednesday's semifinals.

Lione, North Stamford and Redding finished tied atop Pool B with 5-1 records. Lione won the first tie-breaker on a run differential formula. North Stamford defeated Redding in head-to-head competition to earn the other spot. Lione earned the top seed in Pool A and will meet Wilton in Wednesday's semifinals at Springdale at 7:30. North Stamford plays Darien American at 5:30 in the opening semifinal. The winners advance to the championship game July 17 at Scalzi Park in Stamford.

In games Sunday, Lione finished pool play with an 18-0 romp over Stamford Northrop. North Stamford trailed Ridgefield American late in the game before rallying for a 12-8 victory. Redding beat Stamford American, 13-0.

Darien American finished as the only team to go unbeaten in pool play with a 11-10 win over Ridgefield National. Wilton defeated Federal, 5-1, to finish pool play 5-1. Darien American nipped Wilton, 7-6, in a showdown of unbeaten teams on Saturday. Norwalk also wrapped up Pool B play with a 7-4 win over Darien National.

In the 9-and 10-year-old tournaments on Sunday, North Stamford defeated Wilton, 12-5, to win the District 1 title and Redding/Easton nipped Darien in softball, 9-8, to claim the district crown. Both teams advance to sectional play.
