Lifters Push Their Limits in Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Weightlifters from the Northeast pumped iron, and lots of it, at Sunday's Connecticut Open at Bluestreak Sports Training in Stamford.

The meet was conducted by the Team Connecticut Olympic Weightlifting Club, a Wilton-based organization run by Stamford native Gary Valentine. Lifters competed in the snatch and clean and jerk. Athletes competed in weight classifications in men's, women's and junior divisions. Athletes were competing in open, master and Crossfit classifications. Winners were awarded based on total weight lifted in the two lifting components.

Gwendolyn Rojas, an eight-year-old from Maine who competes for East Coast Gold, was the youngest lifter in the field. Some lifters in their mid 60s were the oldest contestants.

Complete results and more photos will be published later this week.
