Letter From London: A Convincing, And Key, Win

John LaCava, the father of Weston Olympic rower Nick LaCava, is providing occasional diaries from London during the Summer Olympics. Here is his report from Sunday.

ETON, England -- Today was do or die.  One final race to move on or be eliminated. I think the parents were more nervous than the rowers. Another beautiful clear day. Another packed crowd of about 25,000. Four boats racing. One would go home. All very strong contenders.

The U.S. lightweight four crew got a fast start and never looked back. They were ahead at the 1,000 meter mark by a good margin and were never threatened. A convincing win to the chant of USA … USA … USA. The Italian and Czech boats also survived. Poland did not.

We we able to spend a little time with Nick and the other rowers after the race. This is the first time we have seen him since we arrived on Thursday. They are determined, pumped, and optimistic. On to the semifinals on Tuesday.
