Kids' Races Return to Minute Man

Mark Carmody, a physical education teacher at Long Lots School in Westport for the last 12 years and owner of Peak Performance Sports Camps, will once again coordinate the Kids' Fun Run races at the 33rd Annual 5K/10K Minute Man Race. The race, presented by the Westport Young Woman's League, is scheduled for Sunday, May 1, at Compo Beach.

The coaches from Peak Performance Sports Camps will give Carmody a helping hand in coordinating activities for kids ages 3 to 12 on race day.

Lynne Openshaw, chairwoman of kids' activities at the Minute Man race, is thrilled to have Carmody back. "Mark brings a fantastic energy, professionalism and creativity to the kids' races, which really helps set Minute Man apart from other events. We had more than 200 young participants last year, and are looking forward to an even bigger turnout thanks to incredible feedback we received from parents after last year's race."

Adds Carmody, "Organizing the kids' portion of the Minute Man race is a great way to promote a healthy lifestyle, give back to the members of the Westport community and help raise money for some great charities. Come rain or shine, we're going to make this a fun, action-packed day for kids of all ages."

Peak Performance Sports Camps runs kids' sports programs after school, during vacation weeks and over the summer in Westport, Stamford, Fairfield, Easton and Roxbury. These camps provide children with a unique opportunity to participate in the same kinds of sports and activities that are offered in physical education classes. The Kids' Fun Run races begin with a warm-up at 8:10 and starting times at 8:30. The races will be tiered based upon ages. For kids ages 5 and under, there is a 100-yard dash. For children ages 6 to 8, there is a half-mile course. For children 9 to 12, there is a 1-mile course. All participants will receive a ribbon. Trophies and certificates will be awarded for fastest girl and boy in each age category for the half-mile and 1-mile races. There will also be prizes for the overall fastest times in the half-mile and 1-mile run for a boy and a girl.

Mark added, "The Minute Man Race is a great opportunity for parents and kids to come out, share an active morning together and raise money for charity. The money raised goes to local charities here in Fairfield County, and that leaves everyone feeling good!" After the race, kids' can enjoy crafts provided by Educational Warehouse and a variety of snacks from local stores and restaurants.
