STAMFORD, Conn. - It has been speculated for some time, but now it is official: Stamford native Bobby Valentine will be the next manager of the Boston Red Sox. Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston tweeted that Valentine was offered and accepted the job one of the most high-pressure jobs in sports for one of its most-storied franchises.
Valentine, 61, has not been in a Major League dugout since being fired from the Mets managerial position after the 2002 season. Valentine guided the Mets to the National League pennant in 2000, when they lost to the Yankees in a famous Subway Series.
Valentine also managed the Chiba Lotte Marines from 2004 to 2009 and won the Japan Series in 2005. Since returning to the United States, Valentine has become a fixture on ESPN and has increased his presence in his hometown of Stamford.
Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia named Valentine as Stamford's public safety director in January.
