Ice Box Takes 2nd in Derby

Westport horse owner Robert LaPenta came within a couple of lengths of having his first Kentucky Derby winner Saturday. Ice Box, with Jose Lezcano up, made a strong run in the stretch but couldn't catch winner Super Saver. Ice Box took second, 2 ½ lengths behind the winner.

"At the half-mile pole he started running, but I didn't want to go wide in a 20-horse field," Lezcano said in The Star-Ledge of New Jersey. "I had to check at the quarter-pole but he came again and made a big run." Ice Box, who drew the second post position, didn't figure to be a factor for most of the race.
