Hay Wins 5 Events for Springfield

Springfield College coach Jim Pennington called upon Nikki Hay five times in Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference track championships. Each time, Hay ran the fastest or jumped the farthest.

The senior from Norwalk won the 100 and 200 meters, long jump, triple jump and anchored the 4 x 100 relay team to victory. Springfield finishes second behind MIT. Hay qualified provisionally for the Division III national championships in each event.

Remarkably, Hay dominated in just about every event. She ran the 100 in 12.19, followed by teammate Erica Marks in 12.5. Her closest race was in the 200, where Hay ran 25.24 followed by Wheaton's Dedi Jusme in 25.29. In the long jump (18-3 ¾) and triple jump (37-3 ¾) Hay won by nearly a foot. Hay's relay team won by nearly a second, and set a school and league record.

Earlier this year, Hay won a national championship. She won the triple jump at the NCAA Division III indoor meet. Her brother, Nickel, runs on the Springfield men's team. The men won the league championship on Saturday and Nickel earned all-conference honors by anchoring the 4 x 400 relay team to a second place finish.
