GREENWICH, Conn. Danny Balin sank one for his country. The Greenwich golf professional from Burning Tree Country Club and featured instructor in Main Street Connect's "Golf Tip of the Week," recorded the second-ever hole-in-one in the 25-year history of the PGA Cup in San Martin, Calif., boosting Team USA on Saturday.
Balin drew his seven-iron on the 183-yard seventh hole in the third round of the PGA Cup. The shot fought a stiff breeze, landing a few yards left of the green on a small hill. The ball wasn't done yet. It slowly rolled 30 feet before sinking into the cup.
Balin drew cheers from the spectators and high-fives from his teammates and opponents. Balin and his partner Scott Erdmann ended up losing their match on the day, but Team USA holds a commanding 10 1/2 to 5 1/2 lead entering the final day of play Sunday.
The PGA Cup is the club professional equivalent of the Ryder Cup. Ten club professionals from the United States take on 10 from Great Britain and Ireland in foursome match play. Balin takes on Christopher Gill of Exeter, England, on Sunday in the final round of singles match play.
