Greenwich swimmers won just one individual event but captured two relays and won one of the tightest races for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference crown Thursday night at the Greenwich pool.
Greenwich won with 371 ½ points, followed by New Canaan with 350 ½ and Westhill/Stamford with 338. Darien (280) and Ridgefield (279) rounded out the top five. Ridgefield won five individual races, including two each by Brian Bollerman and Andrew Klutey.
New Canaan's Jason Potter won the 100 freestyle for New Canaan's only individual win. The Rams also won the opening 200 medley relay and swam higher than their seeds in just about every event, helping the Rams push the Cardinals right to the final race.
"Everybody stepped up for us,'' coach Jason Paige said. "All of the teams had good times. We had a phenomenal meet and we're excited about what's next as we head into states."
Austin Wolff added a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly, John Santoro was second in the 200 individual medley, Potter was third in the 200 freestyle, and the Rams took second in the 200 and 400 free relays.
Darien did not have an individual champion, but the Blue Wave had a number of strong performances. Tyler Gould was third in the 100 free, and the Blue Wave took third in the 400 free relay and fourth in the 200 free relay.
Staples finished sixth with 214 points. Nathaniel Boley led the way for the Wreckers with a win in the 200 backstroke. Wilton finished seventh (183), followed by Fairfield (73) and Norwalk (60).
Greenwich won the meet for the 39th time in 40 years. New Canaan (2007) is the only other team to take home the league title since 1971. Michael Dustin won the 100 butterfly and anchored two winning relay teams to lead the Cardinals.
