The U.S. will face Canada in the semifinals Friday. Sweden and Finland meet in the other semifinal. The losers of the semifinals will meet for the bronze medal on Saturday. The winners of the semifinals will play for gold on Sunday.
Shattenkirk assisted on a goal by Phil Kessel 2:01 into the third period to stake the United States to a 5-1 lead. Shattenkirk has had three assists in four games for Team USA (4-0).
New Canaan’s Max Pacioretty is also a member of Team USA along with Hamden native Jonathan Quick, a goalie, has made 21 saves and is 3-0 in the tournament.
James Van Riemsdyk, Dustin Brown, David Backes and Zach Paries also scored for the U.S. on Wednesday.
After Van Riemsdyk scored for Team USA 1:39 into the game, Ales Hemsky tied the game at 4:31 for Czechoslovakia. Brown and Backes scored later in the first period, and Parise score in the second period.
Finland eliminated Russia from medal contention, 3-1, and Canada used a late goal to squeak past Latvia, 2-1. Sweden shut out Slovakia, 5-0, in Wednesday's other quarterfinal.
