Greens Farms Girls Win Shootout vs. Westover

WESTPORT, Conn. – Caroline Vanacore scored two goals Wednesday to help lift Greens Farms Academy to a 5-3 victory over Westover School.

After Westover scored an early goal, senior Emily Caldwell, in her first game back from an injury, took a pass from senior captain Nora Flaherty of Norwalk and fired a beautiful shot into the corner of the goal for a 1-1 tie. The score remained tied at halftime before both offenses opened up in the second half.

Junior Blair Pelley (Darien) scored 90 seconds into the second half, and just minutes later, sophomore Hilary Shannon took the ball through the Westover defense and found junior Phebe Wong. Wong moved the ball towards goal and shot past a diving Westover goalie for a 3-1 GFA lead.

After Westover narrowed it to 3-2, Wong found Vanacore at the top of the box. Vanacore took one touch on the ball and passed it to the left corner of goal for a 4-2 lead. Westover answered again before Caldwell assisted on a final goal by Vanacore.

Sophomore Caroline Kruk played the first 40 minutes behind net and made three saves until junior Meghan Donovan took over the last 40 and earned three saves of her own. The two goalies backed up Pelle, senior captains Kate Tomlinson and Sam Brown, and sophomores Georgie Gardner and Cole Vanacore in the back. Juniors Caroline Vanacore, Meighan Grady and Kiki Kauffman, along with sophomore Rachel Cohen and freshman Olivia Lennon, all held down the middle of the field and played many great balls up to the offense.

GFA next meets Brewster Academy Friday at 3:30.
