WESTPORT, Conn. Phebe Wong scored the games only goal as the Greens Farms Academy girls soccer team defeated Rye Country Day, 1-0, in a battle between two of the premier teams in the Fairchester Athletic Association.
GFA scored in the 13th minute when Emily Caldwell took the ball up the left side of the field and crossed it into the box. Wong sent the ball past the diving Rye Country Day goalkeeper.
GFA forwards Tia Carson and Hilary Shannon provided additional depth and strength for the GFA offense, while juniors Caroline Vanacore, Meighan Grady and Kiki Kauffman and sophomore Rachel Cohen and freshman Olivia Lennon, held down the middle, as well as Rye's two best players.
The GFA defense, consisting of senior captains Kate Tomlinson and Caldwell, junior Blair Pelley, sophomore Georgie Garner and freshmen Lennon and Campbell Goldsmith, stepped up to the challenge and allowed only 11 shots on goal, while sophomore keeper Caroline Kruk didn't let one get past her
GFA travels to play Canterbury on Wednesday.
