Greens Farms Academy has a habit of starting slowly. Even so, the Dragons raced out to a 34-12 halftime lead and went on to defeat King of Stamford, 68-39, in a Fairchester Athletic Association boys basketball game Thursday in Stamford. GFA improved to 6-3 with its fourth straight win. King fell to 9-3.
Weston's Dan Chase scored 21 points to lead the Dragons, while sophomore Sean Obi of Greenwich muscled inside for 18 points and 18 rebounds.
As usual for the Dragons lately, however, the victory was a team effort. Coach Doug Scott used all 12 players to keep the defensive pressure on King's talented scorers Tre Tipton and Matt Regina. For the first time in their prolific careers, both were kept to single digits in the same game. Norwalk's Drew Sawyer led King with 12.
Darien's Wills Rooney set the tone for the evening, getting his first start as a Dragon. Rooney shut Regina down completely. He shared that role with Will Pavlis and Brien Comey. Kam Mickens, the fleet-footed freshman, Dan Hoffman, Christian Papic, Chris Morency and Hunter Eggers all took turns putting full court pressure on King's certain All-League nominee Tipton. He was frustrated into a career low of three baskets.
Chase shot 50 percent from the field and 9-for-11 from the foul line for GFA. Obi added five blocks while shooting 64 percent from the field. Eggers chimed in on the high quality shot theme, shooting five for seven. Papic, of Darien, added a three pointer while point guards CJ Smith and Eric Walsh (Darien) were the orchestrators. They dissected the King full court press with gorgeous passes and committed zero turnovers.
GFA hosts Williams at 1 p.m. Saturday.
