Golfers Invited To Join Celebrity Tourney

GREENWICH, Conn. — Openings are available for individual golfers or foursomes for the 24th Annual Jerry Sr. Memorial Celebrity Golf Tournament on Aug. 9 at Innis Arden Golf Club in Old Greenwich.

The longest continually running celebrity charity event in the Northeast benefits Abilis, formerly known as ARC. Abilis supports people with autism, Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities who live in the area.

The benefit tournament has confirmations from 14 sports celebrities, and several more are expected. The tournament honors the late Jerry Porricelli Sr., who played a vital role in organizing the event for many years.

Sue Merz, Tommy John, Howard Johnson, Ottis Anderson and Karl Nelson are among the sports celebrities who have confirmed they will play in the tournament, which begins with a shotgun start at 12:45 p.m.

Merz is a Greenwich native who excelled on defense as a member of the U.S. women's ice hockey team that won a gold medal in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and a silver medal in the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.

John had a long and successful career as a pitcher for the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers, among several other teams. Johnson had a solid 14-year career in the Major Leagues, including most of it as a fan favorite known as "HoJo" when he played for the New York Mets from 1985 to 1993.

Anderson was a running back on two of the New York Giants teams that won Super Bowls and was the MVP of Super Bowl XXV. Nelson was a teammate of Anderson's and a starting offensive tackle on that great 1986 Giants team that won Super Bowl XXI.

The fee for golf is $600 per player or $2,200 per foursome. It includes brunch, a day of golf with a celebrity, a cocktail reception, awards banquet and prizes. More information may be obtained at www.porricellis.com and www.abilis.us or by calling Porricelli's at 203-637-2281 or Abilis at 203-531-1880.
