Four on the Fourth Winner Keeps Tradition Alive

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — It wasn't one of the hottest Four on the Fourth races, but it might have been one of the most humid. It was also one of the biggest as 339 runners, the third largest field in the race's 29-year history, covered the out-and-back course on the roads of New Canaan on Monday.

The race's tradition received a bow when Madison's David Cotton, a redshirt freshman at the University of Virginia, won the race in 21:20. His father, Mike, an All-American runner at UVa and a multiple state champion during his career at New Canaan High School in the mid-1970s, won the Four on the Fourth race 25 years ago. The younger Cotton's time Monday was slower than his dad ran a quarter century ago, but in his words, "It was fast enough to win." James Grebey of Stamford was 25 seconds behind in second, with Darien high schooler Michael Johnston in third another 19 seconds back.

The women's winner was a New Canaan High grad, but Nancy Clayton played lacrosse during her days as a Ram. A relatively recent convert to running, Clayton's 24:38 gave her a 22-second margin on Meg Peterson of Fairfield, who was followed across the line 12 seconds later by the latest running star for the town, Caroline Murray, who recently concluded her career at New Canaan High.

The sweaty finishers cooled down with the traditional popsicles while the awards — flag-themed running socks — were handed out. Complete results are available on the race website.
