Fitness Academy to Open in Norwalk

The Fairfield County Sports Commission will announce tonight at Norwalk City Hall the creation of the Chelsea Cohen Fitness Academy.  The academy will provide disadvantaged area children and teens with access to a more active and healthy lifestyle. Norwalk Mayor Richard Moccia will make the announcement tonight at 6:30 along with Wilton High School graduate and U.S. National Team soccer star Kristine Lilly.

The primary goal of the Cohen Fitness Academy is to create a facility that stays open all year and will offer Norwalk children and other Fairfield County youth access to the best available fitness trainers, coaches, and health and wellness programs. A kickoff event for the Academy is scheduled for Aug. 5 at Norwalk High School.

The Cohen Fitness Academy became a reality in large part from a significant donation from the Forever Young Foundation, a charity founded by NFL Hall of Famer and Greenwich native, Steve Young.

Chelsea Cohen was a star on the Norwalk High School soccer team when she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer of the nervous system. Cohen died in 2006.
