Fciac Softball Race Heads to Final Week

The race for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference heats up as teams scramble for positions in the final week of the regular season. The jockeying for position takes on an added twist as a gloomy forecast could wreak havoc with the schedule.

A showdown Monday between Darien and Westhill starts off a busy final week. The Vikings (15-0 FCIAC) hold down the No. 1 seed. Darien (14-1) is seeded second. They meet Monday at Darien at 4 p.m.

St. Joseph (12-3) is seeded third, followed by New Canaan (11-4), Danbury (10-5), Stamford (9-6), Wilton (9-6) and Fairfield Warde (9-6). Staples is seeded ninth with a 9-7 league record, and Fairfield Ludlowe is 8-7, along with Ridgefield. Norwalk is 7-8 and is seeded 12th.

Several big games could impact the race. Warde plays Danbury on Wednesday and Darien on Friday, both at home. The Mustangs also have a home game Monday against Harding. Warde has lost to Wilton and Stamford.

Staples has just two regular season games left, on Wednesday against Ludlowe and Friday against Greenwich. Wilton meets Ridgefield, Greenwich and Trinity Catholic, while Stamford plays Bridgeport Central, Trinity and St. Joseph.

Westhill, Darien, St. Joseph and New Canaan have secured playoff spots. The first round of the playoffs is Monday, with the semifinals Tuesday. The championship game is scheduled for May 26.
