Fciac Girls Basketball Tips Off

Girls basketball kicks off the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference’s winter sports season Wednesday. St. Joseph of Trumbull is the defending league champion.

There are several interesting opening-day matchups. Trinity Catholic, which lost to St. Joseph in the championship game last season, hosts a veteran Stamford team in a 6 p.m. tipoff. Both teams are expected to be league playoff contenders.

Staples, which has reached the state tournament 26 straight times under veteran coach Ed Huydic, tips off at 7 p.m. against Fairfield Ludlowe. New Canaan visits Brien McMahon at 5:30 p.m. and features Sarah Mannelly, who averaged 17 points per game last season and earned first-team all-league honors.

Other games Wednesday from Main Street Connect communities find Darien at Bridgeport Central at 5:30,  Bassick at Westhill at 5:45, Wilton at Greenwich at 7,  Norwalk at Ridgefield at 7, and Danbury at Fairfield Warde, also at 7.
