Girls basketball kicks off the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conferences winter sports season Wednesday. St. Joseph of Trumbull is the defending league champion.
There are several interesting opening-day matchups. Trinity Catholic, which lost to St. Joseph in the championship game last season, hosts a veteran Stamford team in a 6 p.m. tipoff. Both teams are expected to be league playoff contenders.
Staples, which has reached the state tournament 26 straight times under veteran coach Ed Huydic, tips off at 7 p.m. against Fairfield Ludlowe. New Canaan visits Brien McMahon at 5:30 p.m. and features Sarah Mannelly, who averaged 17 points per game last season and earned first-team all-league honors.
Other games Wednesday from Main Street Connect communities find Darien at Bridgeport Central at 5:30, Bassick at Westhill at 5:45, Wilton at Greenwich at 7, Norwalk at Ridgefield at 7, and Danbury at Fairfield Warde, also at 7.
