FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Whether its running, riding or both, the calendar is crowded again this weekend for Fairfield County recreational athletes.
There are road races in Norwalk and Westport, the Connecticut Challenge bike ride in Westport and a sprint triathlon in Greenwich.
The Norwalk-based Lightfoot Runners host the nine-mile Ian Eaccarino Memorial Race beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at Calf Pasture Beach. Norwalks Julie Heaphy, who has won all three races in the womens division, leads the series standings as she seeks to become the first woman to win the overall series title. Geoffroy Allimant of Norwalk is second in the series standings. The series concludes with an 11-mile race Aug. 18. Runners can register on race day.
The fifth race in the Westport Summer Series is 4.7 miles beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at Longshore. Wiltons Mary Zengo, who won the womens overall title last year, won the womens division of last weeks 4.1 mile race. Matt Klein of Trumbull was the overall winner. Zengo and Carolyn Murray of New Canaan have each won two of the first four races in the womens division. Saturdays race begins at 8 a.m.
The Volvo of Stamford Greenwich Cup triathlon, sponsored by Threads 'n' Treads, starts at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at Tods Point in Old Greenwich. The race consists of a half-mile swim, 15-mile bike ride and three-mile run. Wiltons Mitch West and Kelli Montgomery were the mens and womens winners last year. There were 354 finishers in the 2011 race.
Many Fairfield County cyclists have already registered for the Connecticut Challenge, which consists of rides of 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 miles. The ride raises money for cancer survivorship programs.
