Jeter's decision follows last year's retirement of Mariano Rivera, who had a farewell tour of baseball when he made his announcement of his last season before the 2013 season began.
Jeter made the announcement Wednesday on Facebook, thanking fans in a 15-paragraph statement.
"The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball," the Yankees captain said. "I will remember it all: the cheers, the boos, every win, all the plane trips, the bus rides, the clubhouses, the walks through the tunnel and every drive to and from the Bronx."
Unless the Yankees male the postseason playoffs, Jeter's final game will come Sept. 28 at Fenway Park in Boston. His final game at Yankee Stadium will be Sept. 25, against the Baltimore Orioles.
However, the Yankees say they have not yet been informed of Jeter's retirement plans, according to a report by SNY-TV.
