When Glenn Katz hires instructors at Integrated Sports Training, the former professional baseball player isn't after just any seasoned pro. I look for people who are extremely patient and want to work with children, Glenn said. You have to have high energy.
Katz, a Norwalk native, has experience to go around. He starred at the University of Connecticut and was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Katz realized the importance of proper physical development as he climbed the ladder in professional baseball. It changed my outlook, Katz says. I want to bring that experience back to the younger levels. At IST, instructors not only teach baseball and softball, but also provide expertise in fitness and strength training.
In March, baseball and softball training take precedence. Its indoor madness from January through March, Katz says, and then it shifts outdoors.
Players hit, throw and field under a staff that includes Norwalk native Kevin Morton, Doug Vroman, Tyrone Kingswood and Ian and Guy Thoesen, all of whom played professional baseball. Morton was a first-round draft choice of the Boston Red Sox and started 16 games for the team in 1991.
Playing experience is an asset to Katzs staff, but the crews most important trait is passion. We love what we do, said Katz. Young ballplayers whack baseballs and fire pitches every day after school now to prepare for the upcoming season, and Katz smiles as he watches players develop. Its like a family here, Katz says.
