County Rowers Earn Spots on Junior National Team

The U.S. Junior National Team that will compete in the 2011 World Rowing Junior Championships will have a strong Fairfield County presence. Rowers from Southport, Westport, Weston and New Canaan are among those selected to compete for the U.S. in the Aug. 3-7 meet at Eton Dorney, Great Britain.

Sisters Rosie and Lucy Grinalds, Southport residents who compete for the Norwalk-based Connecticut Boat Club, made the team in different events. Rosie will compete in the Women's Pair with Corinne Bozzini. Lucy will compete in the Women's Four. Both earned silver  at the world meet last year.

Saugatuck Rowing Club's Max Meyer-Bosse (Westport) and Graham Anderson made the team for the second straight year. Meyer-Bosse will row in the Men's 8+, while Anderson will compete in the Men's Double Sculls with New Canaan's Charlie Campbell, who competes for the Maritime Rowing Club. Meyer-Bosse's boat includes fellow Westport rower Alex Perkins, who attends Kent School.

Westport's Elizabeth Youngling, who rows for the GMS Rowing Center in New Milford, made the Women's 4x team. Jonathon Rosow, who rows for the New Canaan Crew out of Maritime, earned a berth on the Men's 4x. Deirdre Fitzpatrick, who competes for the Connecticut Boat Club, earned a spot on the Women's 8+.

The coaching staff includes CBC's Liz Trond, Maritime's Yan Vengerovskiy and Volodymy Opaluyk, and Guenter Beutter of Wilton, who directs the GMS Rowing Center. The complete U.S. team is listed on the USRowing.org website.
