Cooley Signs Extension at Fairfield

Fairfield University men's basketball Ed Cooley signed a new contract to coach the Stags through the 2015-16 season. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The contract will supersede an extension which was signed in February, 2010.

Cooley led the Fairfield University men's basketball team to a 23-11 season in 2009-10, the second most wins in program history. Under his guidance, Fairfield has improved on its win total in each of his four seasons at the helm and never suffered a losing record in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. The Stags advanced to postseason play for the first time when it received a bid to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. In the first round of that tournament, the Stags overcame a 27-point second half deficit to defeat George Mason by a 101-96 score in overtime, the largest postseason comeback in Division I history.

Cooley posted 67 wins as the Stags head coach, the most wins by any Fairfield men's basketball coach in his first four years at the helm. He is averaging 16.7 wins per season at the helm, the best per season average in Fairfield basketball history. He is the only Fairfield coach to post a .500 or better record in MAAC play in each of his four seasons, owning a 43-29 record against conference foes.

"From the first time I set foot on this campus, I knew that Fairfield University was the right fit for me to start my head coaching career," Cooley said. "I am proud and welcome the opportunity to continue to serve as the head coach at Fairfield University. I appreciate the commitment that the University has made to me and my family with this extension. I look forward to continue building this program into a consistent winner that will challenge for postseason play each year."
