FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Connecticut Boat Club rowers got the season off to a strong start Saturday with a win in the Varsity 8 at the Head of the Housatonic Regatta at Indian Wells State Park, Shelton.
Despite losing 16 girls from last years team to graduation, Norwalk-based CBC came roaring out of the gate in its first fall competition. Two previous events were canceled due to post-Irene water conditions.
In the Varsity 8, rowings signature event, CBC finished first out of 28 entries. CBCs lineup includes coxswain Ali Hornung, Deirdre Fitzpatrick, Abby Stevenson, India Knight, Katherine Squitieri, Tori Babchak, Bea Nash and Sarah Schwartz.
CBCs junior varsity team finished eighth. That unit consisted of coxswain Steph Leone, Holly Geffs, Kendra Shutts, Sarah Mudd, Kirsten Wessel, Kyle Maier, Lizzie Steinborn, Maggie Roberts and Emily Olsen.
In the 4+, CBC took first and fourth. The winning team included coxswain Hornung, Fitzpatrick, Babchak, Knight and Galloway. Coxswain Leone, Squitieri, Stevenson, Nash and Schwartz finished fourth after some unfortunate luck, when a crew they tried to pass blocked the CBC girls.
The 4x with Emily Olsen, Shutts, Maggie Roberts and Lizzie Steinborn finished sixth out 14 entries.
CBCs Novice teams also had an encouraging start, finishing first and third. The winning team consisted of cox Kassie Boliakis, Kyle Maier, Jessica Ferrante, Paige Voight, Kate Hickey, Juliet Ruhe, Isabel Fitter, Kate Tyrell and Casey Clifford.
