FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Connecticut Boat Club rowers went 5-for-5 last weekend at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, winning one gold, three silver and one bronze medal in the five races it entered.
CBC, based in Norwalk and including rowers from throughout Fairfield County, won the 17-and-under 4+. The Varsity 4+, Varsity 8 and Non-Varsity 8 finished second. The Womens High School 2x took home a bronze. The club's two other boats also finished in the top 10 in one of the most competitive regattas of the fall season.
The 17-and-under 4+ included coxswain Steph Leone, Katherine Squitieri, Abby Stevenson, Holly Geffs and Sarah Schwartz.
The Varsity 4+ finished second out of 40 boats, trailing only Mount Saint Joseph Academy of Philadelphia. The crew consisted of Ali Hornung, India Knight, Tori Babchak, Deirdre Fitzpatrick and Meg Galloway.
The Varsity 8 A team finished second with Ali Hornung, India Knight, Abby Stevenson, Deirdre Fitzpatrick, Meg Galloway, Holly Geffs, Tori Babchak, Squitieri and Schwartz. The B team of Leone, Kyle Maier, Katie deHaas, Paige Voigt, Isabel Fitter, Kirsten Wessel, Kate Hickey, Maggie Roberts and Emily Olsen finished ninth.
Both boats raced hard, and while we were hoping to defend our 2010 Varsity 8 title, we are still reloading the team from last spring, coach Liz Trond said. Second out of 34 teams is incredible, and shows us exactly where we need to go this winter.
In the Non-Varsity 8s, CBC finished second and seventh. The A team was comprised of Kassie Boilakis, Kyle Maier, Bea Nash, Kendra Shutts, Juliet Ruhe, Jess Ferrante, Kate Tyrell and Lizzie Steinborn. The B boat consisted of Katie Lashendock, Margaret Bonnell, Janie Roach, Payton Garrity, Casey Clifford, Kelly Caione, Catherine Wilcock, Kat Norton and Kate Renaud.
Our B boat was the fastest B boat, Trond said. And if there were a separate category for B boats, they would have won! This shows a lot of depth in our program, and with a strong winter season we have so much potential for spring season.
Shutts and Steinhorn took third in the Womens High School under-17 2x. After initially being declared the winners, race officials adjusted times and put CBC into third place.
CBC will race in two venues this weekend. Ten rowers and two coxswains will head to the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival in California. Junior varsity and novice rowers will be competing at the Head of the Riverfront in Hartford.
