Celebrities Swing Away for Charity

Celebrities and well-known athletes will take to the golf course alongside Fairfield County residents at the 23rd Annual Jerry Sr. Memorial Celebrity Charity Golf Tournament on Aug. 10 at Innis Arden Golf Club in Old Greenwich.

The tournament benefits Abilis, a non-profit organization that provides services for people of all ages with autism, Down syndrome or other developmental disabilities. The organization offers evaluations and support for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and a range of behavioral concerns.

Among the featured celebrities participating will be former New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tommy John, who amassed 2,245 strikeouts during his 26-year career. John was also the manager for the Bridgeport Bluefish last year.

John is most famous for the surgery named after him, which repairs the ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow. Hundreds of pitchers' careers ended before this surgery existed, and John was the first to return from the elbow injury. John pitched 14 more seasons after undergoing the treatment.

Other celebrities committed to the event include Karl Nelson, the starting offensive tackle for the world champion 1986 New York Giants, former New York Giants kicker Eric Schubert, former NBA referee Wally Rooney, former world champion boxer Travis Simms of Norwalk and several sportscasters from the tri-state area.

More athletes and celebrities are expected to commit to the tournament in the coming weeks.

The fee for golf is $600 per player and includes brunch, golf with a celebrity, a cocktail reception, awards banquet and prizes. For more information contact Kristen Runk at 203-531-1880 (ext. 110) or at runk@abilis.us.
