CBC Rowers Cruise on the Charles

Connecticut Boat Club rowers finished third and fourth in their races at the Head of the Charles last weekend in Cambridge, Mass.

CBC's Youth Fours Women took third place with a crew of Norwalk's Ali Knight, Darien's Christine Bragg, Weston's Ali Hornung, Fairfield's Maddie Stearns and Greenwich's Heather Oudheusden. They crossed in 18:34.582, behind South Niagara and Marina Aquatic Center. Because Charles racers navigate so many course changes, six bridges and numerous racing buoys, an early starting position makes it easier for crews to go fast. CBC's four was the 52nd boat to start in its event. The girls passed several boats and rowed a penalty-free race to come in third place.

Later in the day, CBC's two Youth Doubles Women boats raced well. Lucy and Rosie Grinalds of Southport finished fourth in 19:09:577, while Jaclyn Cloud and Abby Stevenson finished 19th. Cloud and Stevenson are from New Canaan.

Connecticut Boat Club, located on the Norwalk River, began racing as a club in March and attracts rowers from Southwestern Connecticut and Westchester County, N.Y. Last spring, the club qualified and sent five boats to the U.S. Junior National Championships held in Cincinnati in June, where they became national champions in three events.

The Head of the Charles Regatta is the world's largest two-day rowing competition. This year's event attracted more than a quarter of a million spectators and 8,000 participants. Boats race against the clock after starting at the Boston University boathouse and finish three miles away.
