Carver Center Team Wins County Title

The Carver Center’s 7th grade boys basketball team stopped Stamford, 67-63, to win the Fairfield County Basketball League tournament Saturday at St. Joseph High School in Trumbull. Jeremy Linton scored 28 points to lead the Carver Center, which  finished the season 12-0.

Coach Mike McElveen said Davante Thomas played strong defense down the stretch to help Carver prevail. Other team members include Roy Kane Jr., Justice Page, Tim Hinton, Raymond Featherston, Dantae Francis and Tyre Holman.

The Carver Center opened the tournament with a 55-52 win over the Greenwich YMCA Flame, and advanced to the final by beating Danbury PAL, 56-36. The team rolled through the regular season, winning every game except one by double digits. Carver grabbed an early 12-3 lead against Stamford in the final, but found itself locked in a tight game at crunch time.

Two other Norwalk teams lost in the finals on Saturday. The Norwalk Girls Basketball Association 5th grade squad dropped a 30-23 decision to St. Mary’s of Ridgefield in the championship game. Norwalk finished 16-4, with three of the losses coming against St. Mary’s.

The Carver Center’s 5th grade boys team lost to St. Mary’s, 41-37, in the B division championship. Carver finished 9-9.
