Carver 7th-Graders Shoot Down Madison

The Carver Center seventh-grade boys basketball team beat Madison by 30 points in the final regular season game of the Fairfield County Basketball League. Carver was more challenged, however, when the teams met Saturday for the league's championship in the BB bracket playoffs.

Carver won, 46-33, using a 20-12 fourth-quarter surge to put away Madison. Jahmerkiah Green-Younger scored 15 points, including six in the fourth quarter, to lead Carver. Iziah Hernandez scored all five of his points in the final quarter. Tyler Navarro (eight points) scored four in the fourth.

"We knew we had to step it up in the fourth quarter,'' Younger-Green said. "Coach kept telling us this game wasn't going to be like the last one."

Carver led the entire way, using a full-court press to built a 12-8 lead after the first quarter. Madison hung tough, however. Carver led 19-15 at halftime and 26-21 after three quarters. Carver raced out to a 32-21 lead in the first 1:04 of the final quarter, and Younger-Green's pretty assist to Navarro put Carver up 36-24 with 6:00 to play.

"They're a very good team,'' said Kyle Davis, who scored four points and helped Carver control the backboards. "We knew they would be tough."

"We had to come out and take control,'' added Pierre Coffey, who added four points. "We pulled it out."

Carver finished the season 19-6. Five of the losses were by four points or less. It needed a late rally to get past Stamford, 57-52, in its opening playoff game and then stopped Newtown, 72-62, to reach the final.

"I felt like we could win the tournament even before the Stamford game,'' coach David Williams said. "I thought if we played our game, we'd be tough to beat. When we beat Stamford I really liked our chances. I knew Madison was going to come play us tough. Fortunately our boys stepped up.”
