Campbell Reaches Semis at World Meet

New Canaan's Andrew Campbell advanced to the semifinals on Friday to lead a strong day for rowers from Fairfield County in the World Junior Rowing championships in Racice, Czech Republic.

Campbell, who won his opening heat on Thursday, finished second in the quarterfinals. Campbell was in third place off the start, but moved into second position behind Greece's Dionysios Angelopoulos by the halfway point. The U.S. sculler held on to finish in a 7:22.38, with Angelopoulos crossing first in a 7:17.73.

The women's eight, with New Canaan's Marianne Hoeft and Southport's Rosemary Grinalds, will look to win a third straight world title on Saturday. The U.S. won its preliminary race on Thursday and will take on Czech Republic, Romania, Great Britain, Germany and Russia in the last event of the day on Friday.

A team from Maritime Rowing Club finished fifth in the repechage of the men's four. Thacher Dodge (South Salem, N.Y.), Parker Lange (Darien), Thomas Stolarski (Weston) and Charles Campbell (Darien) finished fifth in the repechage and will now race for places 7-12 in Saturday's B final.

Susan Greenberg of Westport and Alexandra Zadravec of Fairfield finished third in the second repechage of the women's double sculls. Despite The U.S. duo missed qualifying for the A final by just 0.6 seconds. Greenberg and Zadravec will now race Pakistan, Croatia and Estonia for a spot in the C final.

The U.S. men's quadruple sculls crew also missed qualifying by less than a second, finishing third in its repechage. Graham Anderson (Weston) and Max Meyer-Bosse (Westport) joined Patrick Donohue and Alex Johnson on the quad. The U.S. will now race Serbia, France, Slovenia, Denmark and Peru in Saturday's C/D semifinal.In the women's pair, Elizabeth Youngling of Westport and Hemmingway Benton finished fourth in the repechage. Youngling and Benton will now race in Saturday's B final for places 7-9. Complete results are available here.
