Bridgeport To Host UConn Women In NCAA Basketball Tournament

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team is on its way to another Final Four. But first it’s making a stop in Fairfield County. The No. 1-seeded Huskies will play NCAA regional games in Bridgeport starting Saturday afternoon.

Bridgeport’s Webster Bank Arena will host third-round and quarterfinal games March 30 and April 1. Second-seeded Kentucky will play No. 6 Delaware on Saturday at noon, followed immediately by UConn versus fourth-seeded Maryland. The winners will play Monday evening for a trip to the 2013 Final Four in New Orleans.

“The ability for fans to come see an NCAA tournament game at the price we are offering is outstanding,” Howard Saffan, president of Harbor Yard Sports & Entertainment, said in a statement.

The Huskies aren't traveling far for many of their recent games. UConn hosted opening-round games for the tournament in Storrs this year. They defeated No. 16-seed Idaho, 105-37, in the first round, and then advanced to the Sweet Sixteen with a 77-44 win over eighth-seeded Vanderbilt on Monday night.

This is the fifth year the Webster Bank Arena has hosted NCAA women’s basketball tournament games. First- and second-round games were played in Bridgeport in 2004, 2008 and 2012, and regional finals were held there in 2006. Fairfield University is the host of this year’s games as the Webster Bank Arena’s resident team.

"We are excited to host the 2013 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Regional at our home court, the Webster Bank Arena,” Fairfield athletic director Gene Doris said in a statement. “Fairfield University looks forward to again working with the MAAC and the Arena to bring March Madness to the region."
