Boys Basketball Playoff Chaos Comes to a Head

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. - The bottleneck that is the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference boys basketball playoff race all comes down to one final day -- Wednesday. Seven teams mathematically still are alive for the two final postseason spots with one game to play that day.

Here's the easy part: St. Joseph, Westhill, Trinity Catholic, Ridgefield and Bassick all have clinched conference playoff spots and will be seeded in that order barring several upsets. Stamford should lock up the sixth seed in the tournament with a win versus Harding, the last-place team in the Central Division.

The wheels fall off after that, as five different teams are tied with 9-8 records. Bridgeport Central is in the best position to lock up the seventh seed, taking on Brien McMahon (4-13). Fairfield Warde and Trumbull both have the hardest roads to the playoffs, taking on unbeaten St. Joseph and third-ranked Trinity, respectively. A win would lock up a spot, but Warde holds the tiebreaker advantage over Trumbull.

The game that most likely will decide the eighth and final seed will be the matchup between Danbury and Greenwich. If Warde and Trumbull both lose, the winner of the Hatters-Cardinals game will clinch a playoff berth.

But wait, there's more. If Central, Warde and Trumbull all lose, there still is a tiny mathematical chance for Staples or Fairfield Ludlowe to qualify. Both teams sit at 8-9 in conference play and would need those three teams to lose and Greenwich to beat Danbury. Both Staples and Ludlowe have tie-breaker advantages over the Hatters. Oh, and they would need to win their last game as well.

So, got it? Don't worry - it'll all be clearer Thursday morning.

Boys basketball conference quarterfinals begin at noon Saturday. All games will be played at Fairfield Ludlowe.
