Blake Runs Away in Mother's Day 10K

Eric Blake wasn't exactly sure where he was going at Sunday's Mother's Day 10-kilometer run at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk. Even with that uncertainty, Blake easily won the 33rd annual edition of the race.

"I didn't know the course too well, I didn't really know where I was going,'' said Blake, who ran 34:29. Stamford's Anatolie Vartosu took second in 35:44 followed by Matt Mellet in 35:53. Blake said the wind was difficult, but it helped him toward the end of the race. "We had it our back for about the last two miles, so that helped,'' he said.

Blake, of New Britain, is training for the Mount Washington 7.6 mile road race next month. He won the race in 2006 and 2008, but is hoping for a good performance this year because it is a qualifier for the U.S. Mountain Racing team. "I thought this would be a good hard run to help tune up for that race,'' he said.

Race director Don Capone said there were over 400 runners pre-registered for the race, and there were a sizable number of runners that registered prior to yesterday's 8 a.m. start. The weather felt more like the middle of March that mid-May, and many runners wore long pants and jackets to protect them from the chilly winds that blew through Calf Pasture. Race proceeds benefited American Heart Association.
