Area Triathletes Shine in National Race

New Canaan's Eben Jones, Old Greenwich's Karen Newman, Westport's Marcus Russi and Stamford's Megan Kelly were among the top finishers from Fairfield County on Saturday in the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships in Burlington, Vt. The race featured the top triathletes in the country.

Jones, 51, won his age group in the Olympic distance event, which consisted of a 1.5-kilometer (0.93-mile) swim, 40K (24.8-miled) bike ride and 10K (6.2-mile) run. Newman, 50, finished third in her age group in the Sprint distance triathlon, which is a 750-meter (0.47-mile) swim, a 20K (12.4-mile) bike ride and a 5K (3.1-mile) run. Kelly, who delivered triplets in early May, returned to competition and was the top woman from Connecticut. The 32-year-old finished seventh in her age group. Russi, 16, finished sixth in his age group in the sprint and was second in the state.

Newman was the third woman from Connecticut in the Sprint, followed by Rocio C. Fields, 41, of Wilton. Jones was the top Connecticut athlete in the Olympic distance race. Other men who competed at the Olympic distance from the county included Zachariah Pratt of Riverside (215th overall); Norwalk's Peter Eddy (40th overall); Greenwich's Joseph Turcsanyi (402nd) and Robert Dahl (442); New Canaan's Nicholas Sykes (604); Stamford's Flavio DeSimone (663), Matthew Woods (707) and Dan Nascimento (924); Darien's Bob LaBanca (1,010); and Westport's John Schluter (1049).

Greenwich's Anja Krieger Redwood, 24, finished third among Connecticut women in the Olympic distance and 385th overall. She was ninth in the 20-24 age group. Wilton's Katie Bottini, 25, was 387th overall and eighth in the 25-29 age group. Pascale Butcher of Southport was 969 overall and 19th in the 50-54 age group, and Stamford's Kate DeSimone was 1085 overall. Greenwich's Katha Diddel Warren (1,181), Wilton's Lusa Dunn (1,274), Cos Cob's Anne MacKell (1,337) and Easton's Laurie Hollander (1,406) were also among the finishers.
