Area Golfers Start Strong at Amateur

Even with 18 holes of qualifying still remaining, it appears as if Norwalk's Tommy McDonagh and Rowayton's Cameron Wilson will be sticking around at the U.S. Amateur. Both played well Monday in Round 1 of qualifying.

McDonagh, a senior at Penn State, shot an even-par 71 at Chambers Bay Golf Course. Wilson, who will enter his freshman year at Stanford in the fall, shot an even-par 72 at the Home Course. The United States Golf Association uses two courses for the qualifying rounds. The players switch courses tomorrow.

McDonagh and Wilson are tied for 30th place. The top 64 players advance to match play beginning Wednesday. Wilton's John Murphy shot 79 and is in danger of missing the cut. With more than 300 players in the field, some still have to complete their first rounds. Fans can follow the scoring here.
