Ahmad and Simonsen Nab Westport Wins

For Nadeem Ahmad, it was three in a row. For Kristin Simonsen, it was the third time is the charm. In the end, both came away with two markedly different types of victories as the Westport Road Runners Summer Series entered its second half.

Ahmad showed that he can win in tropical conditions two weeks ago, as well as on a flat course, as he did last Saturday. Saturday's 5.85-mile race featured more climbing than any of the first five events, but was blessed with excellent weather almost identical to last week, with temperatures below 70 and low humidity.

Ahmad waltzed to an easy win in 33:57, 46 seconds ahead of Tom Parise, who is becoming the bridesmaid of the 48th edition of this series, notching his fourth runner-up finish in six tries.

On the other hand Simonsen, a track coach at Staples High School, had to hold off Catherine Galin in the final miles to hang on for a 12-second winning margin in 40:52. The duo placed 18th and 19th overall in the field of 113 runners.

The series continues next week over a course that's a mile longer and contains even more hills, including a tough climb up Park Street. Complete results of this week's race, and details on the remaining series events, are available at the Road Runners website.
