Age Is Served at Waveny Race

Sharon Vos is one of the top masters runners in the Northeast, and has won her age group at many races, including the Boston and New York marathons. But she's never won a race outright, until last night at Waveny Park in New Canaan. Thanks to the manipulations of the computer, the 55-year-old Vos won the Age Graded 5K, besting George Buchanan, three years her junior.

In the race, part of the weekly Summer Cross Country Series, runners' times are adjusted based on their age and gender, then ordered accordingly. Vos' 21:03 converted to 15:32, based on what a male runner in his prime could do. That edged Buchanan's 18:16 which age graded out as 15:43, and reversed last year's finish order. In the past, Buchanan would often win the race outright, then increase his margin of victory when his times were adjusted.

The excellent running weather brought out 122 finishers, one of the largest fields in the history of the series, which continues next Tuesday with the Women's Shortcut race. Results and a schedule of the remaining events are posted on the series website.
