1-Pitch Tourney Starts Season

The softball season starts Saturday in Norwalk with the annual One Pitch Tournament, hosted by Norwalk area umpires. There are 14 teams in the tournament, and as the name implies, each batter gets one pitch.

"If it's a ball you go to first base and if it's a strike, the batter is out,'' says Dave Nelson, a long-time umpire who is helping to coordinate the 14-team tournament. "There really isn't any gray area." The tournament is popular with players eager to get the season under way. Teams begin league play on Monday, but the One Pitch Tournament offers an opportunity to chip away at winter rust. "It's almost like spring training for them,'' Nelson says.

Players also like the speed of the tournament. Games are completed quickly. The whole tournament wraps up in one day. The winning team receives $150 and the second place team gets $100, which they use for tournament expenses. Find more about the tournament here.
