Young Scientists Win Awards

Norwalk celebrated its budding scientists last night at the Science Fair Awards Ceremony. Students received awards and cash prizes totaling over $10,000. Held at the Norwalk High School Auditorium, hundreds of parents and friends gathered to celebrate. Science teachers and business people from area corporations acted as judges for the competition.

"A whole bunch of local businesses donated prizes and acted as judges," said fair organizer Glenn Couture, a NHS physics teacher and event organizer.

Couture, who handed out the awards, was joined on stage by Mayor Richard Moccia and the judges including Dr. Muriel Gerhard, retired NPS science supervisor and founder of the event; Dr. John Pinto, professor of biochemistry at New York Medical College; Marie Iannazzi, retired pricipal of Ponus Ridge and current consultant at Side by Side; Dr. Ken Martinelli, NPS science specialist.

Pictured above is Alejandra Garcia, a fifth grader at Naramake Elementary School. Alejandra took home third place in experimental physics for her project titled, "How does cold affect hearing aid battery life?" She said the project has special meaning for her because she herself is hearing impaired.

In January, individual schools held their own science fairs. Winners from each of the school fairs participated in a city-wide fair in February. Below is a list of all the winners.
