Young Astronauts launched 50 balloons up into the air on Friday afternoon in preparation for a much bigger launch next week. In six days, 25 fifth graders from Columbus Elementary School will participate in the Mission Cosmos Aperio, a 24-hour simulated mission into space. The mission is the culmination of a year of studying about space and astronaut training.
"The balloon launch is a way to get the whole school charged up before the actual mission and plus its a real science experiment," says Andy Peace, Commander in Chief and second grade teacher. For the "Payload Launch" as it is called, each balloon had a message tied to the string that describes the Young Astronaut program and asks the finder to contact the school. The balloon landings are all tracked and in previous years, balloons have travelled as far as New Jersey. In the meantime, the countdown begins!
