Students at Brien McMahon High School's Center for Global Studies are hoping that little folded paper cranes can help ease some of the suffering since the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan earlier this month.
"There's an old Japanese story of a girl who was very sick but believed if she could make 1,000 origami cranes her wish to be cured would come true," says Janae Spinato, president of the center's Student Council. "We decided to use that story as inspiration for a project to raise money for disaster relief for Japan." The desire to help was sparked even further after 30 students from Kojo High School in Japan went to McMahon for an exchange visit last week.
The original goal was to sell 1,000 cranes for $1 each. But that has been surpassed as the amount raised has topped $1,200 with sales continuing. The students will use Thursday's shortened school day to produce the cranes.
"It's not a huge amount of money, but every little bit helps," says Spinato.
