Students Celebrate Diversity

Columbus Magnet School celebrated Norwalk's diversity with their fifth annual Culture World's Fair. Hosted by the school's second-graders, the fair provided an opportunity for students to experience the culture of 35 different states and countries. Children sampled bratwurst from Germany and empanadas from Mexico. They sat patiently while they had their hands painted with henna, a tradition of India. They threaded beads onto strings replicating the traditional crafts of Ecuador.

The Culture World's Fair reflects the pedagogy of Columbus, said Emily Lopez, the school principal. A Bank Street/HOT school-- or Higher Order Thinking-- Columbus offers an integrated curriculum for kindergarten through fifth grades with social studies at its core.
