"With tomorrow's temperatures expected to reach the mid-90s, we are concerned about the impact that the heat may have on students in our schools that have limited air conditioning," the district said in a statement.

The following schools will dismiss two hours early Thursday: Nathan Hale Middle School, Ponus Ridge Middle School, Roton Middle School, West Rocks Middle School, Cranbury Elementary, Kendall Elementary, Naramake Elementary, Rowayton Elementary, Silvermine Elementary, Tracey Elementary and Wolfpit Elementary.

All after-school activities at these schools will also be cancelled Thursday. Buses will be available at all schools for early dismissal, and lunch will be served.

"We understand that unexpected early dismissals can create problems for families," the district said. "By making this decision today, we hope to give as much advance notice as possible, so that parents and guardians can make any alternate plans needed. Thank you for your understanding."
