School Designs New Science Park

All Saint’s Catholic School kicked off a year long community effort to design and construct an interactive Science and Energy Park on the school's property in Norwalk. Every student from kindergarten to eighth grade enjoyed the opportunity this week to contribute ideas for the inquiry-based playground. Intended to encourage children to explore the link between science and real-life experience, the park will incorporate levers, pulleys and gears as well as swings and zip lines.

Dennis Wille, a designer with the Ithaca-based Leathers & Associates, gathered the students’ ideas and included them in his playground design that he presented to the All Saint’s community during an evening presentation. The school is seeking corporate grants to cover the costs of materials but plans to construct the park with volunteer labor.

When completed, the Science and Energy Park is expected to enhance the school’s science curriculum and help students’ discover the availability of alternative energy sources while they enjoy a new playground. The All Saint’s community intends to make the Science and Energy Park available to the larger Norwalk community to enjoy as well.
