Hard work paid off for some eighth-graders as Roton Middle School took first place in Division II of the Connecticut Odyssey of the Mind competition Saturday. Roton's sixth-graders also did well, scoring second place in the Full Circle Division II competition.
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving program for students in kindergarten through 12th grade and college. Students form teams and brainstorm to solve problems posed by organizers. Roton's eighth-graders had to design, build and run vehicles that use mousetraps as their only source of energy. The "Mouse Mobiles" traveled a course that featured different challenges, including two challenges created by the students. Then they put it all together into a skit. Roton's eighth-graders -- Matt Allen, Sally Aubrey, Finn Maloney, Connor O'Brien, Megan Root and Tom Skipper -- chose to portray playing cards and made a "disappearing card trick" part of the finale of their performance.Roton adviser Jody Bishop-Pullan said the kids began working on the Odyssey in October. Top teams from the Connecticut state finals go on to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals from May 27 to 30 in College Park, Md.
Other area children participated in Saturday's event, competing in age-defined divisions. Brien McMahon High School's entry in the Full Circle category took third place in Division III.
Rowayton Elementary School had multiple entries in Le Tour Guide. Team B got second place in Division IA. Team C took first place in Division IB and Team A took third. Rowayton also took fourth place in Full Circle Division I (team A).
Roton Middle School took fourth place in Le Tour Guide Division II. Roton's sixth-graders took sixth place in As Good as Goldberg.
