Fay Ruotolo will be leaving as human resources officer of the Norwalk public schools at the end of June. Ruotolo has been in charge of the school districts human resources for nearly 10 years. In recent years, she has come under public criticism for her handling of several personnel matters, including the hiring of Stacy Lore, a fake autism therapist.
Currently, Ruotolo is a defendant in a lawsuit brought against the Norwalk school district by the parents of children who received services from Lore. She was also criticized for the hiring of Dina McNelis, a substitute teacher with a history of abusive behavior toward students in this district and at other area schools. However, a report prepared by the district's human relations officer, Bruce Morris, found that the staff followed proper procedures the McNelis' case.
Last year, the Board of Education voted 6-2 to renew Ruotolo's contract for one year amid grumblings that no written evaluations had been conducted of her performance. Ruotolo is paid $145,000 a year. The school board added a requirement that a written evaluation of Ruotolo be conducted within six months by Schools Superintendent Susan Marks.
